Dr Gerd Müller
Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and DevelopmentGerd Müller was a Member of the European Parliament and Parliamentary Director of the CDU/CSU Group from 1989 to 1994. From 1994, Müller was the directly elected member of the German Bundestag for the constituency of Kempten, Oberallgäu and Lindenau. From 2005 to 2013, he was Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, where he was responsible for international relations, development projects and global warming. Since 2013 Müller has been Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Dr Magdalena Skipper

Carin Smaller
IISD and Co-Director Ceres2030Carin Smaller is Director, Agriculture, Trade & Investment, for the Economic Law and Policy program. She advises governments and parliamentarians on law and policy issues related to foreign investment and trade in agriculture. She is the author of the IISD Guide to Negotiating Investment Contracts for Farmland and Water, the first attempt to create a model contract for developing countries to attract investment for agriculture, while at the same time, promoting the needs of the poor and protecting the environment.
Professor Joachim von Braun
Director of the Center for Development Research (ZEF)Joachim von Braun studied agricultural sciences in Bonn and habilitated at the University of Göttingen on questions of food security in developing countries. After several research stays in Africa, Russia and China, he was appointed Director of the Center for Development Research (ZEF) at the University of Bonn in 1997, for which he now heads the Department for Economic and Technological Change. Joachim von Braun has also been Vice President of the German Welthungerhilfe since 2012.
Professor Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee
2019 Nobel Memorial Prize laureate in Economic SciencesAbhijit Vinayak Banerjee is the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 2003 he co-founded the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) with Esther Duflo and Sendhil Mullainathan, and he remains one of the Lab’s Directors. Banerjee is a past president of the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development, a Research Associate of the NBER, a CEPR research fellow, International Research Fellow of the Kiel Institute, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Econometric Society. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow, an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow and a winner of the Infosys Prize.
Banerjee has served on the U.N. Secretary-General’s High-level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda. He is a co-recipient of the 2019 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel for his groundbreaking work in development economics research.
Bill Gates
Co-Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates FoundationBill Gates is co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Together with Paul Allen, Bill Gates founded Microsoft in 1975 and developed the company into the global leader in business and consumer software and services. Since 2008, he has dedicated himself exclusively to his foundation to improve opportunities for the world's most disadvantaged people. Together with co-chair Melinda Gates, he is responsible for the strategic development of the foundation and sets the overall direction of the organization. In 2010 Bill and Melinda Gates founded the "Giving Pledge" together with Warren Buffett. With this initiative they appeal to wealthy families and individuals to donate a large part of their assets to philanthropic causes and charitable organizations while still alive or on their behalf. In 2015, Bill Gates founded the "Breakthrough Energy Coalition" with the goal of driving innovation in the field of clean energy. In 2016, he founded Breakthrough Energy Ventures, an investor-led fund that provides long-term capital to support innovative clean energy companies.
Dr Agnes Kalibata
Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the 2021 Food Systems SummitIn 2019, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Kalibata as his Special Envoy for the 2021 Food Systems Summit. Since 2014, Dr. Kalibata has also served as President of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), where she leads the organization’s efforts with public and private partners to ensure improved livelihoods for millions of smallholder farmers and a food secure and prosperous Africa. From 2008 to 2014, Dr. Kalibata was Rwanda’s Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI). In this role, she was widely considered to be one of the most successful Agriculture Ministers in sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Kalibata has held several other leadership positions, including Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Agriculture and Deputy Vice Chancellor of University of Rwanda. She also worked for the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Uganda, and various other agricultural development organizations. She sits on various boards including the International Fertilizer Development Corporation (IFDC), Bioversity International, Africa Risk Capacity, the Malabo-Montpellier Panel, and is a member of the Global Agenda Council of the World Economic Forum. Dr. Kalibata has a distinguished track record as an agricultural scientist, policy maker and thought leader. She holds a doctorate in Entomology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Dr Ousmane Badiane
Co-Chair – Executive Chairperson of AKADEMIYA2063Dr. Ousmane Badiane, Distinguished Fellow of the African Association of Agricultural Economists, recipient of the Africa Food Prize in 2015 and member of the World Academy of Sciences, is the founder and Executive Chairperson of AKADEMIYA2063. He has over 30 years of experience, as academic and a practitioner, in international development. As the Director for Africa at the International Food Policy Research Institute, he was instrumental in developing and guiding the implementation of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme. As Lead Specialist for Food and Agricultural Policy at the World Bank, he served as advisor to the Vice President for Africa and originated projects with funding ranging from US$5 million to US$150 million. Between research and development finance, Dr. Badiane taught Economics of Development in Africa at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies for many years. Dr. Badiane received PhD in agricultural economics from the University of Kiel in Germany. He is also recipient of a Doctorate Honoris Causa from the University of KwaZulu Natal.
Dr Máximo Torero
Assistant Director-General and Chief Economist of the FAODr. Máximo Torero Cullen is the Chief Economist of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). He joined the Organization in January 2019 as Assistant Director-General for the Economic and Social Development Department. Prior to joining FAO, he was the World Bank Group Executive Director for Argentina, Bolivia, Chile Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay since November 2016 and before the Bank Dr. Torero led the Division of the Markets, Trade, and Institutions at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). His major research work lies mostly in analyzing poverty, inequality, importance of geography and assets (private or public) in explaining poverty, and in policies oriented towards poverty alleviation based on the role played by infrastructure, institutions, and on how technological breakthroughs (or discontinuities) can improve the welfare of households and small farmers. His experience encompasses Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Asia.
Jutta Urpilainen
EU Commissioner for International PartnershipsJutta Urpilainen is Finland's first female candidate for the European Commission. Before becoming European Commissioner, she was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Finland. Urpilainen has been a Member of Parliament since 2003, with a career in education before moving into politics. She was the first female leader of the Social Democratic Party of Finland, which she led from 2008 to 2014.

Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and DevelopmentDr. Maria Flachsbarth is the Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. She has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2002 and is a trained veterinarian. Since 2013 Dr. Flachsbarth has been Parliamentary State Secretary in two coalition governments of Chancellor Angela Merkel.
